Door Wall Art

Welcome to Chip and Splinter

If you are interested in, or perhaps even obsessed with the romance and mystery of old doors for example, or of flaking stone doorways, maybe it’s the paint peeling on rickety old shutters, or even just the dusty warmth of earthy sienna and umber brickwork from a hot climate, then you are now somewhere that will hopefully fuel your interests and fire up your curiosity for this door wall art.

These artworks replicate, as far as possible, every chip or fragment lost in an old stone and every splinter or split that shows on a characterful piece of old wood.

WHY CHIP AND SPLINTER?

The overriding intent with all my work for sale is to reproduce strictly limited edition artworks that celebrate all of the above, and more. They are 3-D artworks, either in a frame or not as you choose, designed to be hung on the wall, to catch the changing light and to be enjoyed for many years to come. As the light changes through the day, and through the seasons, they will subtly change how they appear in a room as shadows shorten or lengthen, or as the day turns into the evening.

Each piece I complete is deeply hand carved in order to pick up the maximum benefit of working to enhance light and shade, and they work particularly well with a strong side light source, either natural or supplied by some form of illumination.

I recognise myself not as a skilled craftsperson, but rather as a designer and sculptor. These artworks replicate, as far as possible, every chip or fragment lost in an old stone and every splinter or split that shows on a characterful piece of old wood. Hence the company name. This goal defines my work and what I do, as it is through this painstaking process that the character of these elements from old buildings comes back to life in a true 3-D format, rather than in a 2-D painting or graphic illustration. They are shape and texture on the wall.

None of my work can be found exactly as these artworks depict them to be in reality, so there is little point in trying to seek them out! I am not really interested in producing slavish reproductions of existing buildings; there are other people out in the wide world who like to do that type of thing. Rather, I take a subject building, or piece of a building more usually, as an inspirational starting point and work on it from there as an artist or sculptor would very likely do. Each piece will be strongly based upon the chosen subject, but with alterations and changes designed into it in order to produce a unique and creative artwork that better suits my format and the image in my mind’s eye.

Windows and doors tend to be the main features that really personalise a building, and they give the intimacy and originality of somebody’s dwelling place, either in the present or from the past. Be it a battered shutter with its peeling paint, or a beautiful elegant old oak door that has stood the test of time, they can speak to you and this is the reason I tend to focus on them, for their purpose and function, their visual pull, and the sheer diversity in terms of their design and construction across the world.

I relish the slight decay brought about by years of sun and rain on buildings, and the slightly ramshackle appeal of fading colours and heavily weathered stonework brought about by continuous wear and tear of the elements, and buildings that can endure and last. I very much hope that you will enjoy them too and find something here that appeals.

there are a great number of like minded enthusiasts out there who have, for example, romantic notions of the mystery of old doors, their secret stories and the unknowable histories of the people who once lived behind the security they provided.
