There are apparently still well over six thousand stone built barns in the Yorkshire Dales alone, although this example, given its design, is more appropriately a Cotswold type build. The elevation uses two different types of stone finish which are slightly different in colour, a large strongly built buttress helps to support the building, and the construction has arrow slit type windows for ventilation and to allow some light inside. The stable door sections can be opened independently and they are a centuries-old style common on many rural and farm buildings. The shuttered opening above the door on this example is likely to be used for pitching hay through, and also to provide a lot more light if required.
